EMMON is a European project funded by the ARTEMIS program that aims at large-scale and dense real-time embedded
monitoring using wireless sensor networks. The EMMON architecture aims at monitoring different physical properties
(e.g. temperature, humidity, pressure, vibration) of specific geographical areas at unprecedented scale and density,
through the use of tiny low-cost low-power sensor nodes.
EMMON's aim is to perform technological research on large scale distributed Wireless Sensor Networks, including:
- to advance the state of the art;
- to develop efficient, and low power consumption communication protocols;
- to embedded software with better overall energy efficiency, security, fault-tolerance;
- to develop reliable middleware for large scale monitoring and remote command & control operational systems for end-users.
In order to address scenarios such as real-time pollution/noise
maps of a city, or critical infrastructures monitoring (such as bridges, tunnels or the power grid),
EMMON adopts a hierarchical network architecture based on several cutting-edge and worldwide used technologies
and methods developed by the consortium. This guarantees that scalability and quality-of-service requirements are met.
